Leaking basements are bad news. There are many reasons a basement gets wet that have not much to do with a hurricane. However, wetness from reasons different from a flood can yet do a lot of damage. It is vital that all problems that create a wet basement be repaired before the construction and substructure of a home are gravely compromised.
There are many components to the puzzle of ending moisture issues in the basement, but it is imperative that the riddle be figured out.
Start on the interior of your place. Inspect the ceiling, walls, and flooring of your basement. Observe if there are any obvious areas that are wet. Assess any gaps in the walls or flooring to find out if water is coming in. Tape a bit of plastic wrap over the fissures and leave it for a few days. After a time, return and take the plastic from the wall. If you discover is water on the side of the plastic toward the wall then there is no doubt water is leaking into the basement from the outside. If there is water on the side of the plastic that faces into the basement, the issue is too much humidity in the air of the basement. If there is water on either side of the plastic you have a double dilemma taking place.
The two issues of water condensation in the basement from inside sources and leaking from the outside into the basement should be maintained. If these issues are let to stay they will make indescribable damage to your home. Too much wetness will create mold and mildew to produce. A stuffy odor in the air is a hint that this is already a problem. Woodwork especially in the beams and doorsills are amenable to water damage. The woodwork begins to rot and the structure of the domicile is damaged. Termites are attracted to wet areas so too much moisture could encourage a termite infestation which would lead to yet additional damage to the structure of the abode. Water that enters from the outdoors will weaken and ruin the cement base which then makes the house to be unstable Don't defer the needed fixes.
Decrease the moisture in the air of the basement by setting clothes out to dry on a line outdoors and not in the basement. If the dryer is situated in the basement make sure it is vented to the outside and that the vent is closed correctly. Be sure the clothes washer doesn't have any unfastened attachments or punctures in the hoses that go from the washer to the water pipe. Check all the pipes in the basement and throughout the home to be sure there are no problems. Obtain a dehumidifier and have it installed. This will help dry out the basement.
Patch and seal any fissures and openings in the floor and walls of the basement. Put a water resistant sealant on walls and flooring. Make certain the land inclines down and away from the domicile and that the gutters are empty and in good condition. If it is called for have groundwork drains put in and waterproof the outside of your base at the same time the ditches are dug to put the drains in. Lastly make sure a sump pump is put in in the ground of the basement.
